Famed translator, poet, and New Testament and Gnostic scholar Willis Barnstone is a four-time Pulitzer nominee, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and winner of multiple awards, including the Emily Dickinson Award of the Poetry Society of America. He has translated Sappho, Borges, Machado, Neruda, Mao Zedong, St. John of the Cross, Rilke, and many others, and is the namesake of the Willis Barnstone Translation Prize. His work has appeared in American Poetry ReviewParis ReviewPoetry, and The New Yorker, among others. He taught in Greece during its Civil War and Argentina during the Dirty War, and visited China during the Cultural Revolution, later becoming a Fulbright professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University (1984-85).
